Dennis Barnard was brought up in the village shop at Chapmanslade near Frome. He attended Frome Grammar School before starting work in the family business. Later he became a well-known and popular auctioneer.

Daisy Bane was born into a large family which lived in The Broadway. She attended Wesley School and then went to work at Houston’s textile factory, aged 14.
Joan Smith, née Lyons, attended Milk Street School, now called Vallis First School. Later she worked at Beswick’s assembling fuses.

Val Humphries went to St Louis Convent School as a weekly border when she was seven years old. After she left school, she worked for Benchairs on the Marston Trading Estate for nearly 30 years.
Winifred Fairhurst was born in the Trinity area of Frome and attended Milk Street School.
